I don't know what is more of a shock - that the NHL is, in the words of the Times story "the first major pro sports league in North America to lose an entire season to a labor dispute" or the fact that I had absolutely *no* idea that the hockey season was supposed to have begun. Does anyone outside Canada know when hockey season starts anyway?Except for the movie "Slap Shot" (which we just acquired, thank you very much) hockey means oh so little to my world. But I love the Slap Shot (especially the Hanson brothers ... did you know that it was basically a true story! no joke!)

The season starts sometime around when baseball ends. Or that time of year. Fall. It overlaps with Basketball. Or Football. One of those Balls. I *know* it's supposed to start before now. It's half over in theory. And that's the extent of the sport that I know.
