Nobel Update: Economics

And its a bonanza for the US with added bonuses of (probably) up to three Hebrews and one Princeton. A good day for the home teams:

Leonid Hurwicz, 90, a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, initiated the field of mechanism design theory, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in the award citation. His work was further developed by two 56-year-old economists who are sharing the prize — Roger B. Myerson, a professor at the University of Chicago, and Eric S. Maskin, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.

France authorizes troops to fire at IAF jets over Lebanon

French soldiers in Lebanon who feel threatened by aggressive Israeli overflights are permitted to shoot at IAF fighter jets, a high-ranking French military officer told The Jerusalem Post.

Ya know, if France fires at Israel, then it could be the first overt military exchange between two nuclear powers. And it may be the only time that anyone can fire a nuclear weapon (Israel to France) where you're guaranteed the opponent won't fire back.

The Pope and the Muslims

That is, that his record is as a right-wing strict Catholic who will strengthen the core of the religion in Europe - and then the rest of the world - against the encroachment from both secularism and of Islam. He's a fighter, and his expected short term (he's pretty old) will be one of religious conflict.

Italy Beats France

Not that I've been following the World Cup (because, I'm not yet that guy) as a masculine man of the male persuasion, I am indeed interested in whomever becomes the World's Finest in anything (whether it is soccer or the largest bee-beard). And who could predict a win in the battle between the two nations with the highest Surrender-to-Major War ratio?

Well, as the headline explains, it was a tie and then Italy wins World Cup on penalties. Metaphors, sweet metaphors.

And, to quote Scorpio, when asking Homer who he likes less, France or Italy, answers "heh heh, nobody ever picks Italy"
